Why does religion exist? What is its purpose?

Religion plays a complex and multifaceted role in human societies, and its «end» or «function» may vary depending on the context. Even so, here are some general functions that religions often fulfill:

• Provide meaning and purpose: Religions often seek to answer fundamental questions about life, death, suffering and human purpose. They provide a framework to understand the world and our place in it.
• Guiding moral behavior: Religions usually provide ethical and moral norms that guide the behavior of their followers. This can promote social cohesion and cooperation by establishing shared norms of what is considered good or bad, just or unjust.
• Create community: Religions often create a strong sense of community and belonging among their followers. Religious practices and rituals can bring people together, strengthen social ties and provide mutual support.
